Mighty-GFG Philippines is yet to find its match in the 2019 William Jones Cup as it won big for the third game in a row, this one a 94-59 waylaying of Japan, Sunday inside Changhua Gym in Taiwan.
Just like their first two games in the tournament, the Filipinos followed the lead of reinforcements Renaldo Balkman and Eugene Phelps, but also got a much-welcome breakout from Filipino-Americans Mikey Williams.
Team captain Balkman celebrated his birthday by turning in his strongest showing thus far with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks while Phelps muscled his way into 19 markers, seven boards, and two steals.
Williams then dropped 17 points, his tournament-high, to go along with three rebounds and three steals while Jason Brickman also added eight markers, six boards, and three assists.
The Japanese were actually ahead in the earlygoing until Balkman and Phelps joined forces for a 13-1 run that erased a seven-point deficit and erected a 18-13 advantage.
The Philippines would never look back all the way to its biggest win of the tournament.
Up next on the list for Mighty-GFG Philippines is Canada's University of British Columbia on Monday.
