MACAU — In his first tournament as a CBA player, Lance Stephenson leads his new team Liaoning to a championship.
The CBA’s Flying Leopards escaped South Korea’s Seoul SK Knights Sunday at the Tap Seac Multi-sport Pavilion here, taking a close 83-82 victory to win the Terrific 12 title.
In a close game, Stephenson hit back-to-back layups to push Liaoning up, 78-75, with two minutes to go.
Despite a final push by the SK Knights, the Flying Leopards would hold on for the victory, becoming the second CBA team to win a championship in the East Asia Super League after the Guangzhou Long Lions in the Super 8 last year.
Stephenson led Liaoning with 34 points on top of eight rebounds. Salah Mejri added another 19 points for the Flying Leopards while Mingchen Cong was good for 13. Lance won Most Valuable Player after a sensational week.
The Knights got 36 points from Jameel Warney and 26 points from Aaron Haynes.
Liaoning also pocketed $150,000 for their title win while the SK Knights settled for an even $100,000.
