GENERAL SANTOS CITY --- Streaking Filipino cue artist Warren Kiamco hacked an upset axe against World No. 5 Darren Appleton, 11-5, to qualify in the tough Round of 16 of the World 10-Ball Championships at the SM City Mall here.
Kiamco relied on his solid breaks to reach relatively easy runouts and maintained the hot winning form that won him the Derby City 9-ball classic last week in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Pahirapan talaga ang laban dito. Kailangan medyo buwenas ka rin para manalo," said the 44-year-old, world no. 17 Kiamco.
The Pinoy best will surely have a hard time in his bid to enter the quarterfinals with a young and dangerous Cheng Yu Hsuan of Chinese-Taipei standing in his way.
Hsuan disposed of compatriot Liu Ri Teng, 11-2, to arrange a showdown with the Cebuano.
Another Filipino, Jundel Mazon, squandered a 10-4 lead, and had his head claimed by giant-killer Indonesian Irsa Nasution, 11-10.
Nasution, the 27-year-old Jakarta native, previously scalped World No. 7 and fourth seed Dennis Orcollo in his Round-of-32 match, 11-8, Thursday evening.
Lee Van Corteza booted out World No. 6 and third seed Albin Ouschan of Austria also late Thursday in Round-of-64 hostilities.
Legendary Pinoy bet Francisco "Django" Bustamante wasn’t as lucky as he fell to David Alcaide of Spain, 9-11, in the Round-of-64 Thursday night.
