The final day proved to be the most dramatic, as Rubilen Amit and Team Asia survived a rally from Karen Corr and Team West to claim the 2015 AM8.com Queens Cup after winning, 10-7 last Saturday at the Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila.
Trailing 7-4 and with their hopes of claiming the 2015 Queens Cup hanging in the balance, Team West got off to a strong start thanks to the efforts of veteran Karen Corr, who kicked off day three with a 4-2 comeback win over Eunji Park.
In the succeeding doubles match, the tandem of Corr and Barretta made it two straight for the West, sweeping Team Asia’s Jennifer Chen and Eunji Park to cut Asia’s lead to just 7-6.
Heading into the third match of the night with tons of momentum, Corr played her third straight match of the night, this time in singles competition against current world number one Siming Chen. In the most exciting match of the night, Chen took three of the first four racks to hold an early 3-1 lead. Just like she had shown all night, Corr displayed tremendous heart and rallied to take the last three racks and score the 4-3 win to bring Team West and Team Asia to 7-7 tie.
Finally getting into the groove and playing like the defending champions that they are, Rubilen Amit, Jennifer Chen and Siming Chen took the succeeding 3-on-3 matchup in dominant fashion by sweeping Corr, Ewa Mataya Laurance, and Vivian Villarreal to regain the lead, 8-7.
The momentum shifted to the Asian side as they scored a commanding 4-1 win in the 4-on-4 matchup to push their lead to 9-7. All Team Asia needed to secure the championship was one more win.
Fittingly enough, it was Asian team captain Amit who was next on deck, facing Team West anchor Villareal in a singles match. Amit dominated Villareal, four racks to one to clinch the Queens Cup title for Team Asia.
“Sobrang nine-nerbyos na ako, pero kinaya ko para sa inyo!” Amit addressed the Filipino crowd on hand following their win.
“The fans here in the Philippines, you guys rock!” West captain Laurance also gave praise to the Filipino fans who showed support not only for Team Asia, but for Team West as well.
