MANILA – Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum is certain that the upcoming bout between Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri is bound to be a momentous one.
As both camps head into the final leg of fight week, festivities at the Venetian Macau were alive and kicking as both fighters face off for one last time in front of their fans before stepping into the ring on Saturday night (Sunday morning, Manila Time).
“Clash in Cotai II” would be the second major boxing event held in what is now deemed as Asia’s boxing mecca in two years, and is once again headlined by global superstar Manny Pacquiao. This time, he will be defending his WBO welterweight title against undefeated former champion Chris Algieri.
Feeling the warm reception for both Pacquiao and Algieri from the fans in Macau, Arum is no less than thrilled with the magnitude of the said fight, and how it boosts the awareness of boxing in Asia.
“This is going to be the best show ever in Macau,” Arum said in a report by Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN news. “The whole world is coming to Macau.”
For challenger Chris Algieri’s career, the task at hand feels larger than life. The 30-year old fighter, who even flew his entire family in from New York, once again affirmed the importance of his next assignment.
“Hello to all Filipino fans, but I’m sorry, I need to win this Sunday,” Algieri said.
For eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao, on the other hand, it is just another day in the office. Being a pay-per-view headliner for more than a decade now, “Pacman” is no stranger to the bright lights and screaming fans in attendance. What has remained throughout these years, though, is his steadfast commitment to religion.
“Philippians 4: 13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” Pacquiao said quoting a bible verse.
Pacquiao thoroughly believes that his skills are not enough to help him earn victories, but his faith in the higher power, as well.
“My faith really helps make me feel stronger,” said Pacquiao, who still held daily bible studies during fight week. “I need this.”
