MANILA – As of January 1st, 2015, Donnie Nietes is formally the longest reigning Filipino world champion with a record of seven years, three months and one day.
“Ahas” now officially surpasses the record of the late great Filipino boxing legend Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.
The 32-year old Nietes (34-1-4, with 20 victories by stoppage) solidified both his record and his status in Filipino boxing history after handily defeating Mexico’s Carlos “El Chapito” Velarde during their November 15th clash at Pinoy Pride 28: History in the Making held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
While there is nothing specific as of this posting regarding Nietes’ immediate future plans, the reigning WBO and Ring Magazine light flyweight champion says he is contemplating on a major career move, particularly on the weight class he will be competing at next.
“As of now, I am set for two more fights at junior flyweight, then most likely, I will come up in weight at 112-pounds,” Nietes said during a post-fight interview.
