MANILA – Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach has foreseen an interesting day for him on May 2nd.
In an exclusive interview with Undisputed Champion Network, the six-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year revealed what he sees himself doing on the said date.
“I think I’ll have a room at the Mandalay Bay, that’s where Manny always stays,” Roach candidly said. “And I think we’re going to fight Floyd.”
Despite the apparently stalling of the deal’s progress, Manny Pacquiao’s mentor still holds a generous amount of optimism that things will fall into place and that the bout will finally be pushing through.
Roach adds that Mayweather’s constant television appearances are telling of what the future of the mega bout holds.
“I’m being very optimistic about that, but when you see Floyd on TV talking about the fight, that really means something to me,” Roach explained. He never goes on TV, unless he’s throwing money around and stuff like that and bullsh*tt*ng. But to talk about the fight, first time I’ve seen him do it.”
Negotiations have been ongoing since mid-2009, but failed to bear fruit due to disagreements on matters such as drug-testing and purse cuts. While Roach’s next assignment involves another one of his fighters, Zou Shiming who is slated for a March 7th bout in China, he also revealed that he might actually skip the said trip to finally put up a training camp in preparation for Mayweather.
“I might not go to China. It might get in my way of this fight. That’s how strongly I feel.”
The famed trainer, did reiterate that negotiations need to speed up, as he needs a full six-week training camp to get Pacquiao in tip-top shape.
