The so-called “Fight of the Century” has recently concluded, with Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao failing in an attempt to blemish American boxer Floyd Mayweather’s undefeated record. Yet even with the outcome of the match, a lot of people booed Mayweather. Pacquiao, on the other hand received praises.
It is interesting to note that it seems for a lot of people, especially the audience and social media, that the true champion is Pacquiao. How are the two boxing icons different from one another?
Pacquiao embodies the true rags-to-riches story, where he underwent various life struggles due to poverty, and slowly climbed up the boxing hierarchy to reach the status he is right now. People look up to him because of his God-fearing beliefs, and on his ways of giving back to his country, in spite of tax evasion cases and adultery issues he has faced in the past.
Mayweather, on the other hand, lives a lavish life, showing off his luxuries through various social media outlets. Even if a lot of people would boo him or point out the controversies he has been involved with, Mayweather would not mind the criticisms he receives and instead focuses on her lifestyle and his quest for a clean, unblemished boxing record.
Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have equally famous friends within their circles, yet their personality creates a division between the two icons.
While Pacquiao is seen as an inspiration for most people as how he rose from poverty, Mayweather is seen as someone to be envious of with all the luxuries he has at hand. Pacquiao is seen as soft-spoken and principle-driven, while Mayweather is often seen as loud and brash.
And yet, even with their differences in their personalities, both Pacquiao and Mayweather know how to deal with the various obstacles they encounter in life. Mayweather served a sentence for a domestic violence case, while Pacquiao’s marriage nearly got derailed because of an extramarital affair. Yet for both icons, they were able to face such struggles with grace.
This shows that no matter how much hate or praises both Mayweather and Pacquiao get, they still remain icons in the field of boxing. Watching them fight for a night, no matter the outcome, is still a match that will go into the books: Where two icons, despite their polarizing differences, battle it out in the arena.
