For Donnie Nietes, his next fight is more personal than just business.
“Ahas” will be defending his WBO light flyweight title on July 4th against Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez Jr. in Cebu City for Pinoy Pride 31. Rodriguez holds notable victories over Filipino boxers Jomar Fajardo and Merlito Sabillo, the man whom Nietes is seeking revenge for.
In a report by Ronnie Nathanielsz for PhilBoxing.com, Nietes described Rodriguez as “mayabang” (cocky), adding he is not that impressed with the Mexican opponent.
“I don’t think he has much power.”
Famed strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson, who now works with Nietes and the ALA Boxing fighters, meanwhile believes that a dogfight will benefit them even further.
“If Donnie’s opponent comes to fight we will have a great fight.”
The 33-year old Bacolod native currently holds the longest streak as a Filipino world champion for more than seven years, surpassing the record held by the late great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.
Pinoy Pride 31 will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on July 5th, Sunday, at 10 am.
