On Saturday, July 11th, 108-pounders Donnie Nietes and Francisco Rodriguez will be headlining Pinoy Pride 31 in Cebu City.
Both men will be fighting for the WBO light flyweight title, which is currently in Nietes’ position, and has been for the last seven years.
Rodriguez has been on a hot streak since 2013, winning four straight bouts, before fighting Maasin, Iloilo native Jomar Fajardo to a draw at Pinoy Pride 28 in November 2014. He was able to avenge the said fight in a rematch in January, where he won by unanimous decision.
Nietes, of course, has not tasted defeat since 2004, and has successfully defended his WBO light flyweight title a total of seven times. He is looking to secure his spot as one Pinoy boxing’s greatest by defeating Rodriguez.
As two action-packed fighters, nothing less than fireworks can be expected from both Nietes and Rodriguez. And for Aldeguer, the fight can surpass a lot of expectations.
“Right now, I think this could go down as one of the best fights ever. I think Francisco Rodriguez has always wanted to fight Donnie. We’ve always said we want to bring the big fights here, and now it’s here.”
“We’re hoping everyone comes on Saturday to support a great fight like this.”
