This weekend, WBO light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will be making the seventh defense of his title against former world champion Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez.
In the stands watching him will be none other than the WBO president himself, Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel. The Puerto Rican boxing veteran will be in the country to serve as the fight supervisor.
Having been dealt with a laundry list of Filipino boxers and champions, Valcarcel had nothing but good things to say about the fighters and the Pinoy brand of boxing.
“This is a boxing nation,” Valcarcel said in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN Sports. “One of the three or four boxing nations. It’s like Mexico, Puerto Rico. And Filipinos are well-respected everywhere in boxing. It’s a huge nation of boxing.”
After the weigh-ins, Valcarcel presented a custom-made ring for Donnie Nietes for the boxer’s successful title runs all-throughout his career. As expected, he was all praises for the longest-reigning Filipino world champion.
“One of the greatest. Donnie Nietes has been champion in two divisions in the WBO. He’s got ten title defenses, he broke a lot of his records. We’ve got a lot of respect for him as a champion, and as a human being, too.
