There were a few times when Manny Pacquiao’s religious beliefs were almost deemed absurd.
Most recently, the eight-division champion attributed the healing of his shoulder not to modern medicine, but to God and a little bit of ocean water.
“I’m fine. It’s God’s work. I never saw a doctor. I never did rehab,” Pacquiao said in an interview with the Philippine Star. “All I did was to swim in the sea as often as I could. The salt water healed my wound.”
As expected, word immediately got to his trainer Freddie Roach from eight thousand miles away in the United States. But instead of showing concern, the renowned boxing trainer merely laughed off his fighter’s statements.
"Well the thing is, he's in the Philippines [and] he's got a doctor there,” Roach told Boxingscene.com. “The doctor tells me that he's doing the rehab every day, so the thing is....he's not just going to go in the ocean and God's going to fix it.”
Pacquiao was given until 2016 to be fully healed from the torn rotator cuff he sustained on his right shoulder. He is currently being billed to face either Amir Khan or undefeated world light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.
