Two of the late great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde’s grandsons took home respective knockout victories on Saturday night.
Juan Miguel “The Boss” Elorde made quick work of his Indonesian opponent Arnold Mau, while elder brother Juan Martin “Bai” stopped Yakobus Heluka within six rounds.
Mig Elorde vs. Arnold Mau
It did not take a full round for WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight champion Mig Elorde (19-1, with ten knockouts) to finish opponent Arnold Mau. Mau served as a late replacement for Elorde’s original opponent, former champion and fellow Indonesian Rasmanudin, who had to pull out due to passport problems.
The opening seconds of the first round immediately belonged to Elorde, who dictated the pace and keeping his opponent at bay with a barrage of jabs. Upon getting Mau trapped into the corner by the ropes, he sees the opening to drill a straight left uppercut to the body.
The Indonesian boxer immediately drops to the canvas upon the impact of the punch, and the fight is stopped.
Time of the stoppage: 1:20 mark of the first round, Mig Elorde by knockout.
Bai Elorde vs. Yakobus Heluka
Meanwhile, WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight champion Bai Elorde also racked up a stoppage victory against Indonesia’s Yakobus Heluka.
Elorde, the southpaw was matched up against the aggressive and cocky Heluka, who mainly relied on looping punches and clinches. It did not prove to be too effective in the opening round as Elorde was able to floor his opponent with a single right hand. The Indonesian fighter continued with the same manner of attacks in the succeeding rounds, which again led to more knockdowns.
Heluka managed to hold on through the fifth and sixth rounds, but also remained aggressive and careless, all throughout. By the sixth round, he had already gone down four times in the fight. But the same story continued on throughout the remainder of the round, where he was again floored twice.
It was then when the referee deemed it proper to put the fight to a halt.
Time of the stoppage: 0:38 of the sixth round, Bai Elorde by TKO.
