Despite all the trash he talked against Floyd Mayweather over the years, it seems like Freddie Roach is a believer of the old adage “give respect where respect is due.”
In a short interview with ESNews, the famed boxing trainer felt Mayweather could have done way better against Andre Berto.
“I think Mayweather’s a great fighter at one time. He wasn’t the other night, though. He wasn’t at his best, to me, the other night. I’ve seen him look a lot better, I know he’s a great fighter, he’s got a great jab and all that, but he just didn’t bring it out the other night.”
After the May 2nd fiasco, the mere idea of a rematch between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is often met with untoward reactions. While a huge chunk of fans are no longer interested, Roach evidently believes it could still happen, as long as his fighter works his way towards it.
“I think Manny needs to prove himself first. I think he has to have a good win in his next fight, and then maybe he can have a rematch [with Mayweather]. I think he has to prove that he’s healthy, and that he’s still a top fighter.”
“I think in his next fight, he needs to look good in it, and then we can talk about a rematch,” he added.
