With just three days before his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto was stripped of the WBC middleweight title belt.
It was the same title he won against Sergio Martinez in June 2014. In a statement released by the World Boxing Council, the Cotto camp chose not to abide by the ruling of the organization, which led to their decision to take such measures.
“The WBC's decision is premised on the fact that Miguel Cotto and his camp are not willing to abide by the governing WBC Rules & Regulations, and the specific conditions the WBC established to sanction the fight,” an excerpt of the statement reads. “Simply put: they are not willing to respect the very same rules and conditions which applied to Cotto becoming WBC champion.”
In another report by Dan Rafael of ESPN, an anonymous source says Cotto refused to pay the WBC the $30,000 sanctioning fee.
