Ignacio Beristain has been involved in the sport of boxing for the greater portion of his life.
Having been a trainer since the 1960’s, “Nacho” has seen the game tremendously evolve, making him a credible source about boxing. He is also a member of both the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame for his work as one of the most notable mentors in history.
Recently, the 76-year old trainer shared his thoughts on the possible Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin showdown. Ironically, Beristain believes his fellow Mexican would not be able to stand a chance against the hard-hitting Kazakh fighter.
"In my opinion, they should not do this fight because the Kazakhstani is much better than Canelo,” Beristain told Fight Hub. “His style is not as flashy as that of Canelo, but he is better. He has a lot of different tactics, unlike Canelo. I think he could destroy [Canelo's] career.”
“Currently, Canelo is the most successful fighter of the world, and he is very important to Mexican boxing,” he added. “But I think Golovkin may even force him to retire.”
Currently, there has been no set date for the match-up, as Golokvin is being billed to face mandatory challenger Tureano Johnson in April.
