For Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, friendship would have to be put on hold if the fight against Gennady Golovkin does materialize.
Alvarez and “GGG” have had the opportunity to meet in the boxing ring in the past, but as mere sparring partners. And now that a fight between the two men looms, the Mexican sensation says their personal relationship would have to be set aside.
"If you come to take the fight up to the ring, you lose that friendship," Alvarez said during an awarding ceremony in Mexico City. "I've always said that's why I am a professional boxer and I will fight with anyone. If I have to fight him, I'm ready to do it.”
Boxing promoters deem this said match-up to be the next logical one to make, as Golovkin, who holds the interim WBC middleweight title, has been declared as Alvarez’s mandatory challenger.
Alvarez holds the WBC world 160-pound belt, the title he won when he defeated Miguel Cotto in November.
As of this posting, plans surrounding the said match-up between both middleweight sensations have not been set in stone. But as early as now, Alvarez already foresees an explosive fight.
"Golovkin is strong,” Alvarez said. “He is a great fighter with a lot of power, a style that I like to fight, he comes forward, he likes fighting and it is sure to be a great fight.”
