For Freddie Roach, Timothy Bradley’s victory over Brandon Rios was not something to be proud about too much.
“Desert Storm” stopped Rios in the ninth round of their WBO welterweight title fight in November, marking his first victory under the tutelage of veteran trainer Teddy Atlas.
After the said fight, the 29-year old Rios announced his retirement from boxing.
Bradley is now slated to face Manny Pacquiao in a rubber match for the latter’s 66th and final professional fight on April 9. And in a report by Ronnie Nathanielsz for Boxingscene, Roach says their opponent’s previous victory over “Bam Bam” does not hold that much significance.
“It’s the same Bradley. Look [at whom] they put in front of him – an out-of-shape guy who was ready to retire,” Roach said of Rios.
“Bradley hasn’t beaten Manny yet, and he’s not going to beat Manny on April 9.”
The fight is slated to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the same venue were the first two fights were held in 2012 and 2014, respectively.
