WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes is expected to face mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes for the third time for his next assignment.
In a report by Ronnie Nathanielsz for Boxingscene, the fight between the two is being slated to take place at the Cebu Sports Complex on May 21st. The said fight will mark Nietes’ ninth consecutive defense since winning the 108-pound title in 2011.
The past two encounters between Nietes and Fuentes have been nothing less than notable. Their first fight in 2013 in Cebu City ended in a draw, while their second bout at the Mall of Asia Arena went in favor of “Ahas”, who ended things via ninth round TKO.
En route to the stoppage, Nietes was able floor his Mexican foe a total of three times.
Nietes, who is also the longest-reigning Filipino world boxing champion, currently holds a record of 37-1-4, with 21 victories by knockout. He last saw action in October against Mexico’s Juan “Pinky” Alejo, where he won via unanimous decision.
Fuentes, a former WBO minimumweight world champion like Nietes, holds a record of 23-2-1, with 12 victories by knockout. He last fought in December against Francisco Rodriguez Jr., whom he defeated via split decision.
