Renowned boxing trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain says eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao chose WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley for a reason.
Before picking the option of a third fight with Bradley, Pacquiao was also choosing between former sparring partner Amir Khan and undefeated world champion Terence Crawford for his final bout on April 9th in Las Vegas.
His eventual choice came under the scrutiny of fans, who were not exactly thrilled with the outcome of their previous bouts. Bradley was able to emerge victorious via a controversial split decision verdict when they first fought in June 2012, while Pacquiao was able to win a seemingly expected unanimous decision victory in their rematch in April 2014.
But according to Beristain, Pacquiao chose Bradley as his final opponent, mainly to avoid ending his career with a loss.
"In addition to being a good fighter, Pacquiao is a responsible fighter, professional. He is not going to walk away [from boxing] with a loss, so he chose Bradley,” Beristain said in an interview with ESPN Deportes. “And Bradley is a good fighter but we all know who will win unless Bradley becomes a very different fighter than what he has shown throughout his career."
Before 2015 ended, Bradley made a sudden decision of leaving long-time trainer Joel Diaz and opted to be under the tutelage of Mike Tyson’s former trainer Teddy Atlas.
The new duo did achieve its first victory when Bradley knocked out Brandon Rios within nine rounds in November. But despite this, Beristain believes Atlas’ presence in Bradley’s corner on fight night will not be much of a factor.
“I do not think Teddy Atlas will create a change of such magnitude that Pacquiao is going to [leave boxing] with a loss," he said.
