Reigning middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez finally gets an opponent for his scheduled May 7th fight.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Mexican boxing sensation will be facing former world champion Amir Khan, at the newly-build T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions head honcho Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez, the WBC middleweight title fight between Alvarez and Khan will take place at an agreed upon catchweight at 155-pounds, five pounds lighter than the 160-pound limit.
This said stipulation was the same one used in the negotiations for the Cotto-Alvarez title fight, which took place in November.
"As the middleweight champion of the world, I will take on the best fighters in the sport and on Cinco De Mayo weekend, I look forward to making the first defense of my titles. Amir was a decorated amateur, a two-time world champion and is in the prime of his career. Fans are in for a great fight on May 7," Alvarez said.
The winner of the said fight will be facing the WBC’s mandatory challenger, Gennady Golovkin.
