33-year old Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin is slated to make his ring return on April 23rd.
ESPN’s Dan Rafael first broke the news on Twitter that Golovkin’s next fight has been finalized for the said date, with The Forum in Los Angeles as the chosen venue.
I'm told that Golovkin-Wade is agreed to and approved by HBO. April 23, likely at the Forum in LA. #boxing— Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) February 2, 2016
It has then been confirmed that “GGG” (34-0, with 31 victories by knockout) will be facing fellow undefeated fighter Dominic Wade (18-0, with 12 victories by knockout). The fight will be broadcasted by HBO.
Wade, who is currently the IBF’s mandatory challenger for Golovkin’s middleweight belt, served as the replacement for Tureano Johnson, who was originally pitted against Golovkin. Johnson, however, would not be able to make the April date, as he is coming off shoulder surgery.
The 25-year old Wade has won five of his last seven victories by knockout. He last saw action in June, in a ten-round fight against Sam Soliman. Wade won the fight by split decision.
Golovkin, on the other hand, has won all of his fights by knockout since 2008. He last saw action in October against David Lemieux, where he won by eighth round TKO.
As the WBC’s mandatory middleweight challenger, he is also slated to face the winner of the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan fight on May 7th.
