Pinoy boxers standing out in AIBA Olympic Qualifiers
SEA Games gold medalist Eumir Felix Marcial is also looking to get a win in the 2016 Asia/Oceana Olympic Qualifiers Tournament in Qian’an, China

The Filipino contingent at the 2016 Asia/Oceana Olympic Qualifiers Tournament in Qian’an, China have been impressive so far, with three Pinoy pugs already advancing in the tournament.

In the Men’s Flyweight (52 KG) division, Roldan Boncales Jr. scored a three-round unanimous decision win over Vietnam’s Van Thao Tran. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Boncales, 30-27.

“I was a bit nervous during this important boxing tournament. I was not totally satisfied with my performance because I know I could do better but it was a winning bout. I felt stronger in the second part got my rhythm and my quicker combinations made the difference to help me win my first fight here,” Boncales said in an interview on the AIBA’s official website.

The General Santos City native advances to the Round of 16, where he meets Korea’s Kim In-Kyu, who also scored a unanimous decision win against Fayzmamad Malakhbekov of Tajikistan in the Round of 32.

In the Men’s Lightweight (60 KG) division, 2014 Asian Games silver medalist Charly Suarez advanced into the quarterfinals after defeating Chinese-Taipei’s Lai Chu-En via a three round unanimous decision.

Suarez thoroughly dominated Lai with all three judges scoring it 30-26 for the Davao del Norte native.

Up next for the 27-year old is a quarterfinals matchup against Dheeraj Rangi of India. Rangi advanced into the quarters with a unanimous decision win over Thailand’s Pachanya Longchin.

In the Women’s Flyweight (51 KG) division, lone Pinay pug Nesthy Petecio also made her way into the quarterfinals, defeating Jennifer Cheng of Mirconesia via unanimous decision after four rounds.

Petecio, a two-time SEA Games silver medalist (2011, 2013) and an AIBA Women’s World Championships silver medalist in 2014, earned the nod from all three judges, 40-36, 40-36, 40-35. The 23-year old Davao del Sur native now meets India’s Mary Kom in the top-eight. Kom defeated Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay via Majority Decision in the Round of 16.

A handful of Pinoy boxers will also be seeing action, as 2015 SEA Games silver medalist Rogen Ladon meets Japan’s Tosho Kashiwasaki in the Men’s Flyweight (49 KG) Round of 16.

Men’s Bantamweight (56 KG) bet Mario Fernandez will also look to advance into the quarterfinals when he takes on Turkmenistan’s Yakub Meredov.

Finally, 2015 SEA Games gold medalist Eumir Felix Marcial takes on Australia’s Istafanos Kori in the Men’s Welterweight (69 KG) Round of 16. Kori advanced into the Round of 16 by beating Chinese-Taipei’s Huang Chi-Wen via unanimous decision.

The representatives in the men’s divisons will have to make it into the top three to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Petecio must reach the tournament finals.
