"I dedicate this fight to my father, who’s always been there for me.” - Nonito Donaire Jr.
Holding back his emotions and struggling to get his words out, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. faced the media during Thursday morning’s press conference and dedicated his upcoming fight to his coach and father, Nonito Sr.
Before reuniting for his last few bouts, it was no secret that Nonito Jr. and Nonito Sr. were not in the best of terms. And while they’ve already buried the hatchet, Nonito says that there are still times when they don’t quite see eye to eye.
“We’ve had our differences, but we’ve also had our fun times and moments,” Donaire told the media, as his voice began to crack. “Life in itself is a struggle, but there’s always a way to make things happen and understand things, to always find a solution the way you want to, and that’s something that I haven’t learned, and that’s why I dedicate this fight to my father, who’s always been there for me.”
Stumbling through his words, the emotional Donaire said that he felt he had some shortcomings in terms of dealing with his father.
“I feel like I’ve never given him the respect,” Donaire told the media. “And I give this moment to thank him, and my team, that I am truly grateful for you guys, and for this moment.”
“The Filipino Flash” puts his WBO Super Bantamweight title on the line, Saturday evening against Hungarian challenger Zsolt “Mr. Left Hook” Bedak.
