2015 SEA Games gold medalist and decorated boxer Josie Gabuco is at it once again, making a run for a 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships title in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The 29-year old Gabuco, who came away with a World Championships gold medal in 2012 and a bronze in 2008, advanced to the Light Flyweight Round of 16 last Saturday, May 21, after defeating Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova via Split Decision, setting up a match against Belarusian Volha Lushcyk.
While Gabuco will still have a shot a World Championships glory, the same can’t be said for fellow Pinay pugs Nesthy Petecio and Irish Magno.
Petecio fell in the first round of the flyweight tournament against Moroccan Zohra Ez-Zahraoui, while bantamweight bet Magno also lost in the first round, against Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia.
A World Championships win for Gabuco won’t mean another Pinoy boxer headed to Rio however, as there are only Flyweight, Lightweight, and Middleweight categories in women’s olympic boxing.
