CALI BOUND. Donnie Nietes will be fighting again at the StubHub Center in Carson, California this September

Win or lose this Saturday at Pinoy Pride 36, Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will be fighting again in the United States this December. Against who? Well that’s what we’ll be finding out after Saturday’s main even in Bacolod.

ALA Promotions President and CEO Michael Aldeguer announced during Thursday’s pre-fight press conference that the longest reigning Filipino boxing champion has already been booked for a bout in the US, at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

If Nietes manages to get past his opponent on Saturday, former world champion Raul “Rayito” Garcia, then he meets Moises “Moi” Fuentes in a trilogy bout.

“He’s actually due for a mandatory fight agains Moises Fuentes, that fight has been arranged in the past months, we’ve already agreed with Zanfer Promotions, and hopefully Donnie is successful this Saturday,” Aldeguer told the media in attendance. “We already agreed on a done deal on doing the fight against Moises Fuentes at the StubHub Center in Carson City on September 24.”

Aldeguer discussed further the upcoming event, saying that was a Philippines vs. Mexico event, and they were working with Zanfer Promotions, the biggest boxing promoters in Mexico.

Still, Aldeguer stressed that focus should be on this Saturday’s bout against Garcia first.

“We can’t look past this Saturday, Raul Garcia is a former world champion, he knows what it takes to become a world champion, Donnie has everything to lose, and Garcia has everything to gain.”

What if Nietes ends up losing the title to Garcia? According to Aldeguer, since the Garcia fight was a voluntary defense by Nietes, a rematch clause is in place, and the immediate rematch will take place, instead of the Moises Fuentes bout.

“In respect to Garcia, we also have a rematch clause. You know, anything can happen, he’s a great champion. You know in boxing, anything can happen, so we have a rematch clause, since this is a voluntary defense, and the mandatory fight is against Fuentes.” said Aldeguer. “If in case whatever happens and Donnie loses the title on Saturday, there will be an immediate rematch on September 24 in StubHub Center.”

For his part, Nietes says that having another fight lined up in the United States motivates him even more for this Saturday’s main event for the WBO Light Flyweight Championship.

“Nabibigyan ako na lakas, kasi nga may next fight na ako, so dapat pagandahin ko yung result ng fight ko ngayon, pagbutihan ko yung performance.” Nietes told ABS-CBN Sports. “Malaki siyang added motivation.”
