"This guy runs a lot. He's quick, but he doesn't stand." - Raul "Rayito" Garcia on Donnie "Ahas" Nietes
Former world minimumweight champion and current light flyweight title challenger Raul “Rayito” Garcia had some pretty tough fighting words for reigning WBO World Light Flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, who he faces this Saturday at Pinoy Pride 36 in Bacolod.
“This guy, he’s just a runner.” Garcia told ABS-CBN Sports.
Garcia has fought three other Pinoy sluggers in Florante Condes, Rommel Asenjo, and Michael Landero, and when asked what makes the longest reigning Pinoy world champion different from the rest of them, Garcia didn’t have any kinder words either.
“Unlike the other boxers, this guy runs a lot. He’s quick, but he doesn’t stand. The other three, they were fighters, they weren’t chickens. They weren’t cowards. They didn’t want to run from me.”
In a pre-fight presser, Tuesday afternoon, Garcia also touched on Nietes’ fighting style, saying that if “Ahas” were to stand and bang, he’d get laid out.
“If Nietes stands up and fights like a man, I’m going to knock him out, if he runs, it’s going to be another story.”
“We have a strategy, one for if he wants to run, and one for if he wants to go man to man.” Garcia added.
A 42-fight veteran, Garcia has a professional record of 38 wins, three losses, and one draw. 23 of his wins have come by knockout.
Come Saturday evening, Garcia will have to back his words up against Nietes in front of a partisan Negrense crowd at the La Salle gym.
On May 28th, longest reigning Filipino boxing world champion comes home. Donnie “Ahas Nietes” defends his WBO Light Flyweight Championship against Raul “ Rayito” Garcia of Mexico on Pinoy Pride 36: A Legend in the Making.
