As far as boxing’s concerned, eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao is retired. He said so last April after defeating Timothy Bradley in their third meeting.
This hasn’t stopped Top Rank Boxing’s Bob Arum from making moves with regards to Pacquiao’s comeback fight this year, should there be one.
In fact, Arum went ahead and reserved the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, a prime venue for combat sports, for a possible October 15 event.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Arum made the reservation just in case the surefire boxing hall of famer decides that he wants to lace his gloves up again.
According to Arum, there isn’t anything written in stone, but he believes that Pacquiao does want to come back.
“I’m not sure Manny is going to return, but I believe he wants to return,” Arum said via an interview with Yahoo Sports. “ “The question is, can he return and yet fulfill his duties as a senator in the Philippines? I don’t think even he knows that answer yet, because he’s just taken office.”
Pacquiao, after all, is now a Philippine Senator.
Even then, his name has often popped up in boxing circles. Pacquiao was said to have expressed desire to compete for the Philippines in the Rio Olympics, but eventually said that it was a no-go and that he’d be focusing on his duties as a senator.
Earlier this month, Pacquiao’s name surfaced once again, with reports saying that he’ll be coming back against Adrien Broner.
Arum did little to douse those rumors, and in fact confirmed that Broner was indeed a name being looked at.
“Based on our conversations, that if he can, he is prepared to come back, and Broner is one guy we’re considering.”
At this point, nothing is final, but nothing is out of the realm of possibility as well.
