While there’s still no concrete announcement regarding Manny Pacquiao’s “un-retirement”, the gears are still definitely turning behind the scenes.
Aside from Top Rank CEO Bob Arum already reserving a venue for October, a possible fight date, the big-name promoter has also already narrowed down the list of possible Pacquiao opponents down to three names.
It was well publicized that Adrien Broner, who was initially the big name being linked to the Pinoy eight-division world champion, was asking for more than what Arum or Pacquiao could afford.
“I can’t afford what Broner is asking. Neither can Manny,” Arum said in an interview with USA Today’s Mike Coppinger.
So who are these three names?
According to Coppinger, the winner of the upcoming WBO/WBC junior welterweight title unification match between Terrence Crawford and Viktor Postol is a serious option, and Postol’s trainer, who happens to be Pacquiao’s long time trainer as well, Freddie Roach, spoke about the possibility of Pacquiao and Postol squaring off.
The third option is none other than current WBO Welterweight champon Jessie Vargas, who’s also under Bob Arum’s umbrella of talents, along with Crawford and Postol.
“If Manny wants to win a world title, Jessie Vargas, whose head isn’t up his ass as far as the money, he realizes what is realistic money on pay-per-view now, which isn’t what it was before,” Arum said.
Arum also added that he hopes to have everything settled and certain in the coming week. Among everything else, Arum was very sure on one thing though…
“Manny is definitely coming back.”
