The Philippines has another boxing world champion.
Lanao del Norte’s Marlon “Maranding Nightmare” Tapales stopped Thailand’s Pungluang Sor Singyu in the eleventh round to claim the WBO World bantamweight championship, Wednesday in Om Noi.
Things were close between Tapales and Singyu up until the fifth round, when the hometown boy managed to put the Pinoy visitor in a precarious situation with two knockdowns, but was able to survive.
The 24-year old Tapales answered back in the sixth round, putting the champ on his backside, showing that he’s still very much in the fight.
After giving up the eighth round, Tapales picked up the pace and dominated the tenth round, setting up the finish in the eleventh frame.
A right hook to the jaw followed by a couple of uppercuts from the left hand put Singyu on the ropes, and then Tapales finished things off with a left overhand that landed flush on Singyu’s head, putting the (former) champ down for the count.

Tapales, who could very well be on his way to joining the murderer’s row of boxing stars over at the ALA Gym in Cebu, joins longest reigning Filipino boxing champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, “The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr., and Johnriel “Quadro Alas” Casimero, Gretchen Abaniel and Marnelle Verano as current Pinoy boxing world champions.
The “Maranding Nightmare” picks up his eighth straight win improves his record to 29 wins with twelve knockouts, and only two defeats.
