"El Metodico" could be getting a third crack at a world title soon.
Milan “El Metodico” Melindo could be knocking on the door for another world title shot again soon.
To get there however, he needs to get past number three ranked IBF junior flyweight contender Fahlan Sakkeerin Jr. of Thailand in an IBF-mandated Interim Junior Flyweight contest, as reported by Dong Secuya of PhilBoxing.com
The announcement comes after reigning IBF junior flyweight titleholder Akira Yaegashi got sidelined by an injury.
“We've just received a letter from the IBF ordering us to negotiate with the Sakkeerin camp for the Interim world title fight with Melindo after Yaegashi could not defend his title against Melindo because of injury,” ALA Boxing President and CEO Michael Aldeguer said, via PhilBoxing.
Melindo, sixth in the IBF junior flyweight rankings, could be fighting for the interim belt here in the Philippines, but says that he’s willing to go into enemy territory as well.
The 28-year old Cagayan de Oro native is coming off back-to-back wins against Mexicans Victor Olivo and Maximino Flores after failing to capture the IBF Junior Flyweight title against then champion Javier Mendoza just last year. Melindo is also a former WBO and WBA flyweight title challenger, falling to Juan Francisco Estrada back in 2013.
After coming up short in his minimumweight world title bid back in 2015, Sakkeerin Jr. has put together a four fight winning streak, which includes an IBF Pan Pacific junior flyweight title win in his most recent outing.
