Saturday night, another Filipino boxing world champion was crowned when Jerwin Ancajas defeated McJoe Arroyo via dominant unanimous decision to claim the IBF Super Flyweight Championship.
But that's not all that the Davao del Norte native got for winning that night.
Ancajas was given a 500-thousand peso cash incentive by none other than eight-division world champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.
That half-a-mil was way more than what Ancajas earned during fight night, which was just around $2,700 or just a little over P125,000.
According to an interview with PhilBoxing.com's Aquiles Z. Zonio, Pacquiao thought that what Ancajas earned for winning the title wasn't enough.
"Ang liit ng premyo. He deserves to get a bonus for bringing honor to our country.” Pacquiao said.
And while the 24-year old Ancajas will be going home a hundreds of thousands of pesos wealthier, he says that the fight was never about the money. Ancajas said that he agreed to take a paycut just so he could fight for the world title.
"What’s important to me is to win the world crown and bring honor to our country." Ancajas said. "I need money for my family but I never thought about it while fighting atop the ring. Money, to me, is not the primary motivation"
Ancajas is the first world champion under Pacquiao's MP Promotions banner, and will definitely provide motivation as he Pacquiao himself goes for another world championship in November.
