Donnie Nietes is still hoping for a bout against Roman "Choclatito" Gonzales
Over the weekend, reigning IBF Flyweight Champion Johnriel “Quadro Alas” Casimero successfully defended his title for the first time against Charlie Edwards of Great Britain via tenth round stoppage at the O2 Arena in London.
In a completely different part of the globe, another Pinoy flyweight sent out his congratulations while preparing for a war of his own.
Former long-time light flyweight champion and longest reigning Filipino boxing world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes is currently in California, preparing for his September 24th debut at flyweight against former champion Edgar Sosa, and while he’s definitely putting in a lot of time in the gym, he took time out to watch his fellow Pinoy warrior go to war, and was happy with the outcome.
“Maganda yung pinakita ni Johnriel Casimero, so na-proud ako sa kanya na na-retain niya yung title niya,” Nietes said. “I congratulate Johnriel Casimero.”
And speaking of flyweights, Nietes is still hoping to take on one of the world’s best - former - flyweights in Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzales.
Considered by many as the pound-for-pound best, even more so now after becoming a four-division world champion following his win over Carlos Cuadras for the WBC Super Flyweight Championship.
“Sa akin, gustong-gusto ko talaga makalaban siya. Depende sa managers namin. Kung magkaintindihan, walang problema.”
Before anything else however, Nietes needs to first take care of the obstacle in front of him in Sosa.
Should Nietes defeat Sosa, he could be looking at a world title bout against Juan Francisco Estrada, and then possibly, finally, a showdown with Chocolatito.
