"We just can give the Philippines, the fans something that they've been looking for for a long time." - Nonito Donaire Jr.
It came as a pleasant surprise to a lot of Pinoy boxing fans when it was announced that the highly-anticipated Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas fight card would also feature another Filipino boxing world champion in Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire, who'll be putting his WBO Super Bantamweight crown on the line against unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno.
According to Top Rank Boxing CEO Bob Arum, he believes that Donaire and Magdaleno will put on a great show for the fans at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
"Nonito ,we know what a warrior he is. Magdaleno is a hungry fighter, undefeated. I'm proud of that fight. I think it's going to be a terrific fight," Arum said. " I think every one of these fights is going to be evenly matched but I can see where people are saying Donaire and Magdaleno, two guys that live in Vegas probably will be a barn burner."
The 24-year old Magdaleno (23-0-0, 17 KO) somewhat echoed the sentiments of Arum and took it to another level, saying that he and Donaire could possibly steal the spotlight on November 5th.
"I think we are going to steal the show. You have two guys that are action packed fighters who pack a punch and who just love the sport of boxing. It's going to be our night." said Magdaleno, who's getting his first crack at a world title.
For his part, reigning champion Donaire (37-3-0, 24 KO)) says that there's little difference who he's getting into the ring with.
"For me ready naman ako. Kahit sino wala akong pinipili. Whoever is inside that ring I'll be ready."
More than anything, Donaire, who was born in Pacquiao's hometown of General Santos City in South Cotabato, is happy to be able to fight alongside arguably the Philippines' best boxer.
"We just can give the Philippines, the fans something that they've been looking for for a long time. It gives me great pleasure that I'm very excited for. "
Donaire is coming off a three-round destruction of Hungarian Olympian Zsolt Bedak in Cebu, while Magdaleno is coming off a seventh-round KO over Pinoy boxer Rey Perez in Arizona.
