Negros-born boxer "Mighty" Aston Palicte was triumphant in his United States debut over the weekend, defeating American Osctar Cantu via split decision in Las Vegas.
Palicte, who's ranked within the top-20 in the IBF (11th) and the WBO (15th), remained as the more aggressive fighter for all ten rounds, ultimately outstriking the very-game Cantu for the split decision victory.
The previously-unbeaten Cantu, ranked fourth in the world at flyweight, had his moments, but ultimately couldn't do enough to get the judges' nod.
Recently signing a promotional deal with Roy Jones Jr. Promotions, the Cebu-based Palicte improves to 22-2 in his career, while also claiming the vacant WBO inter-continental super flyweight title and snatching Cantu's NABF super flyweight crown.
At just 25-years of age, the poweful Palicte is definitely a name to watch out for, and could be on his way to becoming a world champion in the near future.
