"El Gringo" Jerusalem could be a world champion by the end of the month
Less than a year into 2017, and already we could be celebrating yet another world championship, as unbeaten ALA Boxing rising star Melvin "El Gringo" Jerusalem gets a crack at his first world championship in late January.
Jerusalem, 22, challenges reigning WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin in Thailand on Wednesday, January 25th, according to PhilBoxing.com's Dong Secuya.
The Bukidnon native Jerusalem (11-0, 7 KO), is coming off a Unanimous Decision win over Fabio Marfa at Pinoy Pride 39 in Cebu last November, and is ranked at ninth in the world in the WBC minimumweight rankings.
Jerusalem is in for what could be the toughest test of his young career, as he goes against the unbeaten Menayothin, who's 44-0 in his career with 17 knockouts. The Thai champion has held the WBC strap since 2014, and has dispatched his last five challengers.
Jerusalem is the first of possibly three ALA boxing fighters to challenge for world titles in 2017, with Interim IBF light flyweight champ Milan Melindo angling for a title shot against champ Akira Yaegashi, and Donnie Nietes looking to get his hands on either the vacant IBF flyweight strap, recently vacated by Johnriel Casimero, or Zou Shiming's WBO world flyweight championship...or both.
