Filipino boxer Melvin "Gringo" Jerusalem came just a bit short in his first ever chance at a world title after falling to reigning WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin of Thailand via unanimous decision, Wednesday afternoon in Thailand.
The 22-year old Pinoy ALA Boxing product gave the Thai champion some trouble with his speed early on, but Menayothin managed to catch up and impose his will on the Pinoy challenger.
A turning point came in the eighth round, when Jerusalem was deducted a point for a low blow, giving the Thai champion a bit of an advantage in the scorecards.
With his back against the wall, Jerusalem tried to rally in the final rounds, but the point deduction would ultimately come back to haunt him after 12 rounds, as Menayothin came away with a razor-close 114-113, 115-113, 114-113 unanimous decision win.
The 22-year old Jerusalem suffers the first loss of his young career, dropping to 11-1 in 12 contests, while Menayothin improves to 45-0, with ten title defenses under his belt.
