"It is not accurate to say that the fight is on. It’s also not accurate to say that the fight won’t happen." - Bob Arum
After originally being scheduled for April 23rd, the Manny Pacquiao-Amir Khan WBO welterweight championship clash has been moved back a month later, says Top Rank Boxing CEO Bob Arum.
"We didn’t have enough time, we were out of time as far as April 22nd or 23rd was concerned and so when we explored May 19th or 20th...we felt that was a better date." Arum told ABS-CBN's Dyan Castillejo.
While Pacqiuao, Khan, and Pacquiao's long-time adviser Michael Koncz seem to be all-in on the upcoming title fight, the long-time promoter on the other hand, isn't quite ready to call the fan-favored clash a 'done deal' just yet.
"It is not accurate to say that the fight is on. It’s also not accurate to say that the fight won’t happen. We don’t know, we have to wait and see if the funds materialize."
"Well, I’m rooting that he’s [Koncz] correct. I hope that he’s correct. I mean I’m not doubting that they will. I just, based on my experience, have to see that the funds materialize before we can push ahead." Arum added.
For Arum, the biggest question mark hanging is if the said funds will indeed materialize for the welterweight contest to happen in Pacquiao's preffered venue, in the United Arab Emirates. As previously reported, big market venues like Abu Dhabi and Dubai were being considered.
"In order for the fight to happen in the UAE, funds have to be produced to enable the fight to happen and I am hoping that those funds would materialize." Arum told Castillejo.
Should the funds indeed come, then Arum and Top Rank Boxing are ready to put on a show.
"Michael is optimistic that the funds will materialize and once they do, then Top Rank will roll up its sleeves and help put on a tremendous worldwide event."
As for the titleholder himself, Pacquiao pretty much echoed Arum, saying that everything depends on the money coming in.
"Sabi ni Bob Arum hinihintay na lang na maipakita ang pondo mula sa UAE para matuloy," Pacquiao told Castillejo.
