Donnie Nietes defeats Thailand's Komgrich Nantapech to become the new IBF world flyweight champion
Donnie "Ahas" Nietes is once again a world champion.
The ALA Boxing Gym star won his third world championship, defeating Thailand's Komgrich Nantapech via Unanimous Decision at Pinoy Pride 40: Domination, Saturday evening at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino, Cebu City.
Nietes came out guns blazing, lighting Nantapech up early rounds. The Thai found his stride during the fourth and fifth rounds, pushing Nietes to his limits. Nietes continued to stay active, throwing his best shots at the ultra-durable Nantapech, who kept pushing forward until the final bell.
After 12 rounds, the judges awarded the unanimous decision nod, 115-113, 117-111, 117-111.
Nietes, the longest reigning Filipino boxing world champion, joins some very elite company as he becomes only the third man Pinoy boxing history to hold a world title in three different weight divisions, along with eight-division world champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and four-division world champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire.
The 35-year old native of Murcia, Negros Occidental improves to 40 wins, one loss and four draws.
