In most sports, if you score more points or convert more goals than your opponent, you're likely to end up winning the contestz.
In combat sports such as boxing or mixed martial arts however, the same school of thought doesn't necessarily apply.
Fighter A may be scoring more points and landing more punches, but should Fighter B land a just one single knockout blow, it's all over.
Sunday's WBO welterweight clash between Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn however, tells a different story.
When Brisbane's Horn was announced as the winner via unanimous decision after twelve grueling rounds, many people found themselves befuddled with the call.
Based on the statistics shown on the broadcast, Pacquiao landed more punches and was the more efficient fighter. (Pacquiao's stats on the left, Horn's stats on the right.)
Stats have Manny landing 182 punches and Horn only 82 pic.twitter.com/PoJYjAXB08— DYAN CASTILLEJO (@DYANCASTILLEJO) July 2, 2017
The statistics also show that Pacquiao landed nearly twice as much power shots as Horn, with more accuracy.
Regardless of what the statistics say, the decision ulitmately fell in the hands of the judges, and they awarded the fight to Horn.
