Filipino minimumweight Rey 'Hitman' Loreto was unable to bring home world championship gold after falling to WBA minimumweight titleholder Thammanoon Niyomtrong via decision, Saturday evening in Chonburi,Thailand.
The 26-year old Pinoy challenger controlled the action in the early rounds, but the champion bounced back, utilizing body shots to wear Loreto down.
A tenth-round knockdown for Niyomtrong, more popularly known in Thailand as Knockout CP Freshmart, gave the unbeaten Thai champion more cushion as the fight went to the scorecards.
After twelve rounds, the judges scored the match in favor of Niyomtrong, 117-110, 117-110, 115-113.
Loreto, the Davao native and former IBO light-flyweight world champion, dropped to 23-14 in his career.
Niyomtrong, 26, improves to 16-0 in his career.
