To say that Milan 'El Metodico' Melindo went through a war to defend his IBF Light-Flyweight championship at Pinoy Pride 42 in Cebu is an understatement.
Against a very game challenger in South Africa's Hekkie 'The Hexecutioner' Budler, Melindo had to overcome adversity to eke out a Split Decision win.
After the 12-round affair, Melindo had some pretty gnarly battle scars to show off.
Melindo suffered a cut above his left eye in a sixth-round exchange with Budler, and the cut needed to checked by the ringside doctor in between rounds.
To make matters worse, Budler opened up another cut in the tenth round, this time on the right side of Melindo's face, bloodying the champion up even more.
Showing the heart of a true champion, Melindo, crimson mask and all, battled through the bleeding and put on a strong final round to earn the split decision nod.
"I want to win, yun talaga yung sinasabi ko sa utak ko, sa puso ko," Melindo said after the grueling 12-round affair. "Kahit napuno na ng dugo yung mga mata ko, ang init na sa mata ko, ang hapdi na, onting-onti na lang yung nakikita ko, pag naka-focus ka, pag gusto mo manalo, makikita mo parin yung kalaban mo."
