Five-division world champion and Filipino boxing great Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. makes his in-ring return this on Saturday, September 23rd (Sunday, September 24th, Manila Time) when he takes on Mexico's Ruben Garcia Hernandez for the vacant WBC Silver Featherweight Championship.
The 34-year old Donaire (37-4, 24 KO) is coming off a lengthy layoff after coming up short in his WBO super bantamweight title defense against Jessi Magdaleno back in Novemeber of 2016.
Since then, the Talibon, Bohol-born Donaire has made a few changes, taking his camp to Las Vegas, Nevada and signing with Ringstar Sports. Now, the former world-champ is back, and ready to reclaim his spot in the top of the rankings.
"I’m ready to return to the ring and show that I still have what it takes to be a world champion and face the best in this sport." Donaire said.
A fan-favorite known for his exciting style and knockout power, Donaire makes his return to the AlamoDome in San Antonio, Texas, where he won the vacant WBO world super-bantamweight crown back in 2012.
"I’m excited to give the great fight fans in San Antonio a great show, just like when I fought Wilfredo Vazquez at the Alamodome in 2012."
"After this fight, I’m coming for all of the featherweight champions and to prove I’m the best in the division.” Donaire added.
His fight on Saturday won't be a cakewalk however, as he faces a young and hungry contender in the 24-year old Hernandez, who comes in with a 22-2-1 record with seven straight wins.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to get in the ring. I know that I am facing a great fighter and that has motivated me to train harder than ever before for this matchup." Hernandez said. "I’m planning on giving it my all and giving the fans a great fight. I hope Donaire comes to fight because I am coming to knock him out on September 23rd.”
The Donaire-Hernandez contest is a featured bout on World Boxing Super Series in San Antonio, headlined by a WBSS Cruiserweight Quarterfinals bout between Cuba's Yunier Dorticos and Russia's Dmitry Kurdyashov.
