The time is almost here for Cebuano boxer Mercito 'No Mercy' Gesta, as he's just a little over a month away from challenging Venezuelan Jorge Linares for the WBA, WBC Diamond and The Ring Magazine world lightweight championships.
Gesta and Linares will be headlining Golden Boy Promotions’ January 27th card at the LA Forum in Inglewood, California.
If you ask the 30-year old Gesta, he’s more than up for the impending challenge of the 43-3 Linares.
“I feel like this is it. This is the biggest fight. Everyone knows Jorge Linares and how he fights, his boxing skill. He has three belts.” Gesta said. “Gusto ko yung challenge na ganito, I feel like kung mas magaling yung kalaban ko, mas ma-lalabas ko yung ability ko dun sa ring.”
As for Gesta’s new head coach and trainer Freddie Roach, the hall-of-fame mentor knows what his ward is capable of.
“It’s a tough fight but Mercito is a very good boxer, a good southpaw and we’re going to give him hell.”
Fight night won’t be the first time for Gesta and Linares to share the ring, nor will it be the first time for Roach to see the reigning champion work.
Gesta as trained with Linares before, while Roach has coached the Venezuelan in the past, and he believes that it won’t he won’t be the same fighter as he was five years ago.
The Pinoy challenge believes that the history between Roach and Linares could work to his favor.
“It’s a little advantage to me kasi alam niya ano ang style ni Linares. Pero kahit alam niya, fighter parin yun.”
“I just really need to work hard and train smart,” Gesta added.
Gesta will have a bit of fire in him heading into the fight, as it appears he’s being overlooked by Linares
The long-time lightweight titleholder is already looking past Gesta and angling for a fight against one of today’s pound-for-pound best in Vasyl Lomachenko.
