Bob Arum: Jerwin Ancajas has a lot of similarities with Manny Pacquiao
“I have had the opportunity to be ringside for Jerwin’s fights in Australia and in Macau and I see a lot of similarities to his co-promoter Manny Pacquiao,” - Bob Arum on Manny Pacquiao (FILE PHOTO)
Already with three impressive title defenses under his belt, reigning IBF super flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas is looking like the next dominant Filipino world champion.
The 25-year old has won via stoppage in his last three title defenses, and people are beginning to take notice, including Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.
With his US debut set for February of 2018, Ancajas has signed with Arum’s Top Rank Promotions.
High on the young champion, Arum went as far as saying that Ancajas has some similarities with a certain other dominant Pinoy boxing champion.
“I have had the opportunity to be ringside for Jerwin’s fights in Australia and in Macau and I see a lot of similarities to his co-promoter Manny Pacquiao,” Arum said via the Top Rank Boxing website. “Jerwin has a killer instinct inside the ring and he is a great finisher.”
Arum should know, being the long-time promoter of boxing greats, including Pacquiao.
As impressive as Ancajas’ last three fights were, even more stunning is the fact that Ancajas streak of stoppage wins dates back to 2012.
“Just look at his record. Jerwin has only gone the distance once in his last 14 fights!” Arum added.
Ancajas will be defending his IBF title for the fourth time against Mexico’s Israel ‘Jiga’ Gonzales at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 3, 2018.
The Panabo, Davao del Norte-born Ancajas defeated McJoe Arroyo to capture the IBF title back in 2016, and has defended the title thrice since, scoring stoppage wins over Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Teiru Kinoshita, and most recently, Jamie Conlan.
