Filipino boxer Mercito 'No Mercy' Gesta put up a valiant effort but ultimately came up short in his attempt at the WBA, WBC Diamond, and The Ring Magazine lightweight world championship, losing to reigning and defending champion Jorge Linares of Venezuela via Unanimous Decision, Saturday evening at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
Cebu's Gesta pushed the action in the early, giving the champ some trouble in the first few rounds.
The more experienced Linares eventually got into his groove as the fight progressed, slowly and surely distancing himself from the Pinoy challenger.
There was no quit in Gesta however, as he kept coming and managed to get some good shots in at Linares.
After twelve rounds however, the decision was clear cut for Linares, who got the nod from all three judges, 118-110, 118-110, and 117-111.
Gesta suffers just his second loss in 35 professional bouts, both losses coming in title opportunities.
Linares improves to 44-3 in his professional career after securing his fourt successful WBA title defense.
