Manny Pacquiao ‘not closing the door’ on Freddie Roach
“Freddie and I are like family, close family. I didn’t make any decision yet about Freddie Roach, but assuming that I will make a decision about Freddie Roach and choose Buboy Fernandes as my head coach for this fight, I’m still not closing the door on Freddie,”

It was inevitable that someone was going to ask about Freddie Roach.

Over the weekend, news broke that eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao had parted ways with Hall of Fame trainer Roach after a partnership that spanned 15-or-so years and 34 fights.

A partnership that saw Pacquiao win seven world championships.

Earlier this week, Pacquiao took to social media, debunking all the news about him and Roach, saying that he hasn’t made a final decision yet as to who will be training him as he gets ready to challenge reigning WBA Welterweight World Champion Lucas Mathysse at Fight of Champions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

During the press tour for Fight of Champions, Pacquiao was asked about the situation between him and Roach, and the boxer-slash-senator further reiterated that he hasn't made a final decision yet.

“Freddie and I are like family, close family. I didn’t make any decision yet about Freddie Roach, but assuming that I will make a decision about Freddie Roach and choose Buboy Fernandes as my head coach for this fight, I’m still not closing the door on Freddie,”

Pacquiao added that should he decided to go with his long-time friend Buboy Fernandez as his head trainer, it would be to give him some experience.

“We just want to try and experience that Buboy will handle this one fight, after that, we will go back to Freddie.”

For his part, Fernandez says that the final word is with Pacquiao.

“Ang importante, si Senator ang makapag-desisyon diyan. Ang sa akin, as assistant trainer, gagampanan ko muna yung trabahong yun.”
