Should Manny Pacquiao decide to retire today, everything that he's accomplished in the boxing world will definitely cement his place as one of the best to ever do it.
in 68 professional fights across two decades of competition, Pacquiao is the only fighter to ever win a world championship in eight weight divisions. That alone is worthy of a spot in boxing's hall of fame.
Yet, as he approaches his 69th professional bout, Pacquiao sets his sights on an achievement that he's never done in his long and storied career, and that's become a WBA world champion.
Pacquiao has held world titles with the IBF, WBC, and the WBO, but never with the WBA.
On July 15th, Pacquiao gets the chance to become a WBA world champion when he challenges reigning WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Champion Lucas Mathysse at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
"The dream is to win the fight and the WBA belt because this is another prestigious event for myself," Pacquiao told ABS-CBN's Dyan Castillejo.
With all the accolades that Pacquiao has achieved throughout his career, it's easy to question what else the boxer-turned-lawmaker has left to prove and what keeps him motivated, but it looks like capturing the only title he's yet to hold is providing the Pinoy boxing legend with all the motivation he needs.
"The key is to bring back myself in focus, more killer instinct, more punches, improve side to side footwork, and stamina," Pacquiao said.
"I told my team strict training and everything that we do,we have to focus. Dapat talaga push pa din. 'Di pa natin nakuha ang WBA belt kaya important din," Pacquiao added.
