With the historic all-Filipino world title bout between reigning IBF Super Flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas and Jonas Sultan already in the books, the focus now shifts on another pair of Pinoy 115-pounders, as they too, get ready for another Filipino-versus-Filipino world title tilt.
On one corner you have three-division world champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes, the longest-reigning Filipino boxing world champion, and no doubt one of the best Pinoy boxers to ever take to the ring.
After successfully defending his IBF Flyweight World Title against Juan Carlos Reveco last February, Nietes made the decision to go up to Super Flyweight, with the hopes of finally getting to take on the big names, guys like Juan Francisco Estrada, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzales, and maybe even compatriot Ancajas.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that Nietes would indeed be fighting for a world title, the vacant WBO Super Flyweight world title, scheduled for August 18th in Cebu.
Standing opposite Nietes will be a relatively unheralded Filipino boxer by the name of Aston Palicte, a fellow Negrense.
The 27-year old Bago City native possesses a 24-2 professional record with 20 of those wins coming via knockout. Three of his last four bouts have ended by TKO or KO.
The Roy Jones Jr.-promoted Pinoy knows what lies ahead of him, and is fully aware of the magnitude of his upcoming bout.
On an episode of ANC Gametime, Palicted shared that while he has the same approach to every fight, he believes that his upcoming tussle against Nietes will be the biggest in his career so far.
"Lahat naman ng laban ko, kahit hindi world championship, lahat iniisip ko yun na malaking laban," Palicted shared. "Lalo na ngayon, kumbaga makakalaban ko yung longest [reigning Filipino world champion]."
"Sa boxing, sa lahat ng laban ko, ito yung pinaka-malaki." Palicte added.
This will be Palicte's first shot at a world championship.
