Sunday’s Fight of Champions card in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will be headlined by a WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Championship clash between eight division champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines and reigning titleholder Lucas Matthysse of Argentina.
Behind the scenes however, it will also feature the reunion of former foes Pacquiao and Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar de la Hoya, but this time as co-promoters.
Fight of Champions, of course, will be the Pacquiao-founded MP Promotions’ first international event, and they’re co-promoting it with Golden Boy Promotions.
“I am very proud of promoting stronger and diplomatic cultural ties with our Asian neighbors. I would like to thank our friends at Golden Boy Promotions, represented by our friend Oscar De La Hoya.” Pacquiao said during Thursday’s Fight of Champions Press Conference.
Pacquiao and De La Hoya shared the ring back in 2008, back when the Pinoy boxing legend was at the peak of his powers. It would be De La Hoya’s final fight, as he retired after losing to Pacquiao in eight rounds.
Even back then, De La Hoya says that he felt he would cross paths with Pacquiao again.
“I was already a promoter when I fought him. So, I’ve always been very optimistic that I would still be working with Manny after so many years. I always felt that life comes around full circle and puts us together.”
“The fact that Manny has his own promotional company and the fact that Golden Boy Promotions has been involved in so many of his fights made me optimistic that we would work together again.” De La Hoya added.
Ten years after their memorable encounter inside the ring, Pacquiao is probably on his last legs as a competitor, while De La Hoya is flourishing as a promoter.
De La Hoya hopes to be able to work with Pacquiao even more, once the Pinoy legend decides to call it a career inside the ring.
“I’m still hoping that we promote more fights together. Once he’s retired, we can do a lot more together.”
